Every week we pick the AI tool updates that actually change something for creators, students and small businesses — and explain what each means for you. Every item links to its original source. Here's the week to 2 November 2026.
1. ElevenLabs launches SFX v3 for richer sound effects
ElevenLabs released SFX v3, its new text-to-sound-effects model, on 29 October. It follows prompts that describe several sounds at once more reliably, generates music and vocals more convincingly, and produces cleaner audio than the previous version in ElevenLabs' testing. It's available in the Sound Effects tab, Studio, the Music Editor and the mobile app, and through the API.
What it means for you: you can describe a whole scene — "rain on a window, distant thunder, a kettle starting to whistle" — and get it as one clip. That's a quick way to add atmosphere to videos and Shorts without hunting through sound libraries. New to ElevenLabs? Read our ElevenLabs review first.

2. Gemini can now create, preview and edit files inside the chat
Since 29 October, the Gemini app can generate and edit documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown, text files and code directly in the conversation. Google says it's available to all users, including personal Google accounts, in every language Gemini supports. PDF editing works on web and mobile; other formats on the web only.
What it means for you: you can ask Gemini for a one-page PDF handout or a simple spreadsheet and tweak it right there, instead of copying text into another app. Handy for quick worksheets, checklists and reports.

3. Deadline: Gemini Gems turn into Skills on 17 November
Google is replacing Gems (custom versions of Gemini) with Skills. For personal accounts, Gems become read-only on 17 November 2026 and are converted to Skills automatically; on 17 December 2026 Gems are removed. Some knowledge files won't carry over — including audio, video, old Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and zip archives — and each Skill holds up to 100 MB of files. Workspace business accounts follow in March 2027.
What it means for you: if you've built Gems, download their knowledge files before 17 December, especially any in the formats above. Skills can be called by typing "/" in any chat and combined in one conversation, so it's worth recreating your most-used Gems as Skills early.

4. Google DeepMind unveils Genie 4, an interactive world generator
Announced on 27 October as a research preview, Genie 4 generates explorable, more photorealistic worlds from a prompt, now with matching real-time audio, and lets you change the scene mid-way by typing. Scenes stay consistent for up to two minutes. It's with trusted testers now, with Google saying it will reach Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie in the coming weeks.
What it means for you: not something most people can use yet, but it shows where video and game creation tools are heading: describing a scene and walking through it. Expect "explorable" content and new kinds of interactive explainers over the next year.

5. Mistral releases open weights for Mistral Large 4
French AI company Mistral published the weights of Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter model, under a licence that allows free use, modification and commercial use (offering it as a hosted AI service needs a separate licence). Mistral highlights coding, cybersecurity and web-browsing results. Through Mistral's API it costs $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.
What it means for you: mostly relevant for developers and businesses that want a powerful AI model they can run on their own servers for privacy or cost reasons. More strong open models mean more choice and downward pressure on AI prices for everyone.
6. Reddit says Google's AI Mode "does not drive traffic"
On its 30 October earnings call, Reddit said search referrals fell by more than a million a week on average in October. CEO Steve Huffman pointed to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as the main likely cause, saying AI Mode "does not drive traffic" — for Reddit or, as far as he knows, anyone else. Reddit plans to test a logged-in-only experience in some markets outside the US this quarter.
What it means for you: if your website or business depends on Google search clicks, don't rely on them alone. Build direct connections with your audience — an email list, a YouTube channel, social followers — so you can reach people even when search engines answer questions without sending visitors.
