QuillBot is a writing assistant best known for its paraphraser: paste a sentence and it rewrites it more clearly, more formally or more simply. Around that it offers a grammar checker, summarizer, translator, citation generator, AI detector and plagiarism checker. Students, non-native English writers and busy professionals use it daily. Here's what you get free, what Premium adds and how to use it without crossing ethical lines.
How we researched this review: plan features and limits were checked on QuillBot's official Premium page on 2 November 2026. US dollar prices come from independent price checks (June 2026), because QuillBot shows prices in your local currency. QuillBot notes that usage limits apply and may vary by app or device. This is a research-based review; our own hands-on test results will be added when our full test is complete.

What is QuillBot?
QuillBot is an AI writing toolkit that works in your browser, as Chrome and Edge extensions, a Microsoft Word add-in, a macOS app, and Android and iOS apps with their own keyboards — so it's there wherever you type. You paste or type text, choose what you want — rewrite, fix grammar, shorten, summarise, translate — and get a suggestion you can accept or tweak word by word.
It's not designed to write whole essays from nothing. Its strength is improving text you've already written.
Key features
Paraphraser
The core tool. Free users get two modes — Standard and Fluency — and up to 100 words per paraphrase. Premium gives full access with 9 built-in modes, unlimited custom modes you define yourself, side-by-side comparison of modes and a history of past paraphrases. Everyone can paraphrase in 23 languages and adjust how many synonyms are swapped in.
Grammar checker
Fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation in 6 languages. Free covers basic errors; Premium adds advanced writing suggestions and tone insights.
Summarizer
Condenses long articles, reports or notes into key sentences or bullet points — up to 1,200 words at a time free, or 6,000 words on Premium, which also lets you create custom summaries.
AI detector and humanizer
The AI detector estimates whether text was written by AI (limited free, full access on Premium). Treat the result as a hint, not proof: no AI detector is reliable enough to judge someone's work on its own. The humanizer rewrites stiff, AI-sounding text to read more naturally — up to 100 words with limited use on the free plan, full access with history and insights on Premium.
Plagiarism checker, citations and translator
Premium includes a plagiarism checker for up to 25,000 words a month. Every user gets the citation generator and a translator covering 40+ languages.
AI chat, images and QuillBot Flow
QuillBot now also has an AI chat for brainstorming and drafting (limited free, higher usage on Premium), AI image creation on Premium (with usage limits), and QuillBot Flow, a writing space that saves your documents — 10 MB of storage free, 100 MB on Premium.

You can pay by card or PayPal, use Premium on up to 10 devices at once, and pause your subscription from your account page when you don't need it — for example during holidays — instead of cancelling. New Premium subscriptions come with a 3-day money-back guarantee. Prices are shown in your local currency on the official Premium page, so check it for your country.
Is Premium worth it? If you only polish the odd email, Free is enough. If you write every day — essays, reports, articles, client emails — the yearly plan removes the 100-word limit that otherwise slows you down, and the pause option means you don't pay for months you don't use it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very easy to use, with useful free tools
- Several paraphrasing modes for different tones
- Works everywhere: Chrome, Edge, Word, Mac, Android and iOS keyboards
- Yearly Premium is affordable, and you can pause it
- Great help for non-native English writers
Cons
- Free paraphraser is limited to 100 words at a time

- AI detection results are not reliable proof
- Monthly plan is expensive compared with yearly
- Easy to misuse in ways that break academic rules
How to use QuillBot honestly
Paraphrasing a source and submitting it as your own is still plagiarism, even if no checker flags it. Use QuillBot to improve your own writing: make a clumsy sentence clearer, adjust the tone of an email, or check your grammar. When you use ideas from a source, cite it — QuillBot's citation generator helps with that. And check your school's or employer's rules on AI tools, because they differ.
How to get started (5 steps)
- Open QuillBot and paste a paragraph you wrote yourself.
- Try Standard, then Fluency mode and compare the results.
- Click individual words to see synonyms, and keep the version that still says exactly what you mean.
- Run the grammar checker on the final text.
- Install the Chrome extension, Word add-in or phone keyboard so suggestions appear where you already write.
Who should use QuillBot — and who shouldn't
A good fit: students improving their own drafts, non-native English speakers, professionals writing lots of emails and reports, and bloggers tightening their writing.
Not ideal if: you want an AI to write complete articles from scratch (a general AI chatbot does that better), or you need specialist editing for legal, medical or technical documents where every word matters.
Alternatives to consider
- Grammarly — stronger for grammar, tone and clarity suggestions while you type.
- ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini — better for drafting from scratch or explaining how to restructure a piece.
- Canva — if what you actually need is to turn your writing into visual posts or slides.
Verdict
QuillBot is an inexpensive, genuinely useful writing assistant, especially for people writing in English as a second language. Free is fine for occasional use; the yearly Premium plan is the one to buy if you write daily. Use it to sharpen your own words, check that the meaning survives every rewrite, and cite your sources.
Frequently asked questions
Is QuillBot free?
Yes. The free plan includes the paraphraser (up to 100 words at a time, 2 modes), a basic grammar checker, 1,200-word summaries, a limited AI detector and humanizer, the citation generator and the translator.
How much does QuillBot Premium cost?
In the US, $99.95 a year (about $8.33 a month) or $19.95 billed monthly. In India the official page shows ₹375 a month billed yearly. New subscriptions have a 3-day money-back guarantee, and you can pause a subscription instead of cancelling.
Is using QuillBot cheating?
Improving your own writing with QuillBot isn't cheating, but paraphrasing someone else's work without citing it is plagiarism. Always follow your school's or employer's rules on AI tools.
How many devices can I use QuillBot Premium on?
All your devices, up to 10 at the same time. Premium works in Chrome, Edge, Word, the macOS app, and the Android and iOS apps and keyboards.
Can teachers detect QuillBot?
Sometimes. AI detectors and teachers can notice paraphrased or AI-assisted text, but detectors also make mistakes. The safest approach is to use QuillBot only to polish your own work and to cite sources.
QuillBot or Grammarly: which is better?
QuillBot is better for rewording and summarising; Grammarly is better for real-time grammar and tone suggestions. Many writers use free versions of both.
