Descript lets you edit video and audio by editing a transcript. Delete a sentence from the text and it's cut from the video. Remove every "um" with one click. Clean up a noisy recording so it sounds like it was made in a studio. For anyone who makes talking-head videos, tutorials or podcasts, it can cut editing time dramatically. Here's what each plan includes and where Descript falls short.

How we researched this review: we checked Descript's official pricing page on 1 November 2026 and read independent reviews published in 2026. Prices, limits and features are quoted from the official pricing page. This is a research-based review; our own hands-on test results will be added when our full test is complete.

What is Descript?

Descript is a video and podcast editor built around the transcript. When you import or record a video, Descript transcribes it automatically. From then on, the text is the timeline: cut, copy and move words, and the video follows. You still get a normal timeline for B-roll, music, captions and titles, but most of the heavy lifting happens in the text.

On top of that sit AI tools that fix common problems: removing filler words, improving audio, correcting eye contact, and generating clips, titles and show notes.

Key features

Text-based editing

The reason people switch to Descript. Editing a 20-minute talking video becomes closer to editing a document. It's especially fast for removing mistakes, long pauses and off-topic sections.

Underlord, the AI co-editor

Underlord takes instructions in plain language — "remove filler words and long silences, then make three short clips for Shorts" — and carries out the steps for you. It can also flag bad takes, suggest B-roll, and write show notes and chapter markers. Each action uses AI credits from your plan.

Studio Sound

One click to reduce background noise and echo and make a voice sound fuller. It's a big upgrade for recordings made with a laptop or phone microphone.

Remove filler words and Eye Contact

Descript detects "um", "uh" and repeated words and removes them in one go. Eye Contact adjusts your eyes so you appear to look at the camera even when reading a script.

AI voices and voice cloning

Fix a misspoken word by typing the correction, and Descript generates it in your voice. Custom voice clones and stock AI voices are available on paid plans.

Transcription

Automatic transcription in 25 languages. Independent testing published in 2026 found it very accurate for clear, single-speaker English, and noticeably less accurate with heavy accents or three or more people talking over each other.

Storage rises from 5GB (Free) to 100GB (Hobbyist), 1TB (Creator) and 2TB (Business). Media hours count everything you upload or record. Unused AI credits don't roll over. Confirm current prices on the official pricing page.

Which plan makes sense? Hobbyist covers a creator publishing one or two videos a week with 1080p export. Choose Creator if you need 4K, full Underlord access, more AI credits or up to 3 seats. The free plan's watermark and 720p limit make it a trial, not a publishing plan.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Editing by text is genuinely faster for talking videos
  • Studio Sound rescues average recordings
  • One-click filler-word removal and Eye Contact
  • Underlord automates repetitive multi-step edits
  • Turns long videos into Shorts and clips easily

Cons

  • Two separate meters (media hours and AI credits) to keep an eye on
  • Transcripts are less accurate with accents or crosstalk
  • Free plan: watermark and 720p only
  • Not built for cinematic or effects-heavy editing
  • Monthly billing costs noticeably more than yearly

How to get started (5 steps)

  1. Sign up free, create a project and drag in a video or record straight into Descript.
  2. Wait for the transcript, then read through it and fix any misheard words, especially names and product names.
  3. Click "Remove filler words" and apply Studio Sound to the voice track.
  4. Cut by deleting text — mistakes, repeated takes and long pauses.
  5. Add captions and export. Then ask Underlord to suggest clips for Shorts and Reels from the same project.

Who should use Descript — and who shouldn't

A good fit: YouTubers who talk to camera, educators recording lessons, podcasters, marketers making webinars into clips, and beginners who find traditional editors intimidating.

Look elsewhere if: you edit music videos, cinematic footage or anything with heavy effects and colour grading — a traditional editor such as DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro is the better tool there.

Alternatives to consider

  • ElevenLabs — if you'd rather not record your voice at all and want AI narration.
  • HeyGen — if you'd rather not appear on camera and want an AI presenter.
  • Canva — its video editor is simpler and great for quick social videos with templates.
  • CapCut — popular, inexpensive editor for short vertical videos.

Verdict

If most of your content is people talking — tutorials, explainers, interviews, podcasts — Descript is one of the fastest ways to edit it. Hobbyist is enough to start, and Creator is worth it once you need 4K or lean on Underlord. Proofread the transcript, keep an eye on your AI credits, and you'll likely spend far less time editing than before.
