HeyGen turns a script into a video with a realistic AI presenter — a stock avatar, or a digital copy of you. It can also translate a video you've already made into other languages, matching your lips and voice. For faceless channels, training videos and multilingual content, it can replace a camera, a studio and a translator. Here's what you get on each plan and when it's worth paying.
How we researched this review: we checked HeyGen's official pricing page and its 2026 release notes on 1 November 2026, and its official product pages. - Paid plans
- Creator from $29 a month ($24 a month billed yearly)
- Standout
- Lifelike avatars (Avatar IV and V) and translation into 175+ languages and dialects
- Watch out for
- Credit limits on advanced features; avatar videos can still feel "AI" to some viewers
What is HeyGen?
HeyGen is an AI video platform. You choose a presenter (an "avatar"), paste a script, pick a voice and language, and HeyGen generates a video of that presenter speaking your words, with natural lip movements and gestures. You can add slides, images, music and captions in its editor.
You can also create a custom avatar of yourself by recording a short clip, then produce new videos just by typing. And with video translation, you upload an existing video and get it back in another language in your own voice, with the lip movements adjusted.
Key features
Stock and custom avatars
The free plan includes 500+ stock avatars and paid plans 700+. HeyGen's newest avatar models, Avatar IV and Avatar V, are its most realistic so far. Every plan includes at least one custom avatar, so you can try a digital version of yourself before paying. A 2026 update added support for continuous talking videos up to 30 minutes.
Video translation
This is HeyGen's most practical feature for creators. The free plan supports 30+ languages and paid plans 175+ languages and dialects. If your English videos do well, translated versions can reach new audiences with very little extra work — but have a native speaker check important videos, because machine translation still makes mistakes.
Voice cloning
One voice clone is included free, with more usage on paid plans, so translated videos can still sound like you.
Newer tools
HeyGen's 2026 releases added "HyperFrames" tools that turn a website or a launch announcement into a video, built-in music and sound effects, Speech Cleanup (which removes filler words and pauses), and direct publishing to LinkedIn. Developers also get an API to generate avatar videos automatically.

The yearly option is advertised as "2 months free". Check the official pricing page for current prices in your country before buying.
Which plan makes sense? The free plan is for testing only — the watermark and 1-minute limit rule it out for publishing. Creator covers most solo creators: 1080p without a watermark, videos up to 30 minutes and full translation. Choose Pro only if you need 4K or heavy use of premium features.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very realistic avatars with natural lip sync
- Video translation into 175+ languages and dialects in your own voice
- Make presenter videos without a camera, studio or editing skills
- Free plan lets you try a custom avatar and voice clone
- Fast-moving product with frequent updates
Cons
- Free videos are watermarked and capped at 1 minute
- Premium features draw on monthly credits that can run out
- Some viewers still notice and dislike AI presenters
- Translations need a human check for important content
- Gets expensive for teams (Business is $149 a month)
How to get started (5 steps)
- Sign up free and open "Create video".
- Pick a stock avatar that suits your topic, or record a short clip to make your own.
- Paste a script under one minute for your first test. Short sentences sound most natural.
- Add visuals — screenshots, B-roll or slides — so the avatar isn't on screen the whole time. Videos with varied visuals hold attention better.
- Try translating one of your existing videos to see if a second-language version is worth it for your channel.
Who should use HeyGen — and who shouldn't
A good fit: educators and course creators, companies making training and product videos, creators who want to publish in several languages, and faceless channels that want a consistent on-screen host.
Think twice if: your audience values a real, personal connection (vlogs, personal stories), or you're planning to mass-produce low-effort videos. YouTube's monetisation rules target repetitive, mass-produced content, so an AI presenter works best as part of a genuinely useful video, not a shortcut.
Alternatives to consider
- ElevenLabs — if you only need a voice over your own visuals, it's cheaper and the voices are excellent.
- Descript — if you film yourself and want easy editing, captions and eye-contact correction.
- Synthesia — HeyGen's closest rival for avatar videos, popular with larger companies for training content.
Verdict
HeyGen is one of the strongest AI avatar tools in 2026, and its video translation alone can justify the Creator plan for anyone with an audience in more than one language. Use the free plan to judge whether the avatars look right for your audience, then move to Creator once you're ready to publish. Pair it with good scripts and real visuals, and it becomes a genuine time-saver rather than a gimmick.
