ElevenLabs is the AI voice tool most creators reach for when they want narration that doesn't sound robotic. It turns text into speech, clones voices, dubs videos into other languages and even makes sound effects and music. Here is what it does well, where it frustrates people, and which plan — if any — is worth paying for.
How we researched this review: we checked ElevenLabs' official pricing and product pages on 1 November 2026 and read independent reviews and user feedback published in 2026. Prices and limits are quoted from the official pricing page. This is a research-based review; we'll add our own hands-on test results here when our full test is complete.

What is ElevenLabs?
ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform. You type or paste text, choose a voice, and it reads the text aloud in a way that sounds remarkably human — with pauses, emphasis and emotion. Around that core it has grown into a full audio studio: voice cloning, dubbing videos into other languages, long-form audiobook production, speech-to-text, sound effects, music, and voice agents that can answer phone calls.
For a faceless YouTube channel or a creator who doesn't want to record their own voice, it solves the hardest part of making a video sound professional.
Key features
Text to speech
The main reason people use ElevenLabs. Its newest model, Eleven v3, is designed for expressive speech: it can whisper, laugh or sound excited when you add simple tags to your text. Multilingual v2 is the steady choice for content in many languages, and Flash v2.5 is a faster, cheaper model for real-time uses. There is a library of thousands of ready-made voices.
Voice cloning
There are two kinds. Instant Voice Cloning (from the $6 Starter plan) copies a voice from a short sample. Professional Voice Cloning (from the $22 Creator plan) trains on more audio for a much closer match. You may only clone your own voice or one you have clear permission to use.
Dubbing
Upload a video and ElevenLabs translates the speech into another language while keeping the speaker's tone. Dubbing Studio is included from the Starter plan. For a channel, this is a cheap way to test whether a Spanish or Hindi version of your best videos finds an audience.
Studio
A timeline editor for long projects such as audiobooks, podcasts and narrated videos, so you don't have to generate everything in one go. The free plan includes 3 Studio projects and Starter includes 20.
Sound effects, music and speech-to-text
You can describe a sound ("door creaking in an empty hall") and get a clip, generate background music, or transcribe audio. Music for commercial use needs a paid plan.
ElevenLabs pricing (checked 1 November 2026)
ElevenLabs bills in credits. Roughly, 1,000 credits gives about one minute of speech with the standard models, according to the minute estimates on its pricing page.
| Plan | Price per month | Credits | About | Key extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | 10 min | 3 custom voices, 3 Studio projects, no commercial licence |
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 | 30 min | Commercial licence, instant voice cloning, Dubbing Studio |
| Creator | $22 (first month often discounted) | 121,000 | 121 min | Professional voice clone, higher audio quality (192 kbps) |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | 600 min | High-quality audio output through the API |
| Scale | $299 | 1.8 million | 1,800 min | 3 seats, 3 professional clones |
| Business | $990 | 6 million | 6,000 min | 10 seats, 10 professional clones |
Yearly billing is offered as well. Prices can change and may differ by country, so always confirm on the official pricing page before you buy.
Which plan makes sense? If you publish one or two narrated videos a week of about 8–10 minutes, you need roughly 40–80 minutes of speech a month once you allow for re-takes. That points to Creator. Starter is enough for a few Shorts a week. The free plan is for testing only, because it doesn't include a commercial licence — so you shouldn't use it for monetised videos.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Among the most natural, expressive AI voices available
- Commercial licence from just $6 a month
- Voice cloning, dubbing, music and sound effects in one account
- Works in dozens of languages
- Well-documented API for automation
Cons
- Credits run out fast — every re-generation costs credits
- Real costs can be higher than the minute estimates suggest
- Long narrations can drift in accent; shorter chunks work better
- Support is slow according to many user reviews
- Free plan can't be used commercially
How to get started (5 steps)
- Sign up free and open Text to Speech.
- Pick a voice from the library. Listen to a few with your own script — voices sound different with different text.
- Paste a short section (one paragraph) first. Generate, listen, and adjust punctuation to change the pacing: commas for short pauses, full stops for longer ones.
- Generate in chunks of one or two paragraphs rather than a whole script. It's easier to redo one bad line, and it keeps the voice consistent.
- Upgrade only when you publish. Move to Starter or Creator before you use the audio in a monetised video, so you're covered by the commercial licence.
Who should use ElevenLabs — and who shouldn't
A good fit: faceless YouTube channels, course creators, podcasters who need intros or translations, authors making audiobooks, and anyone dubbing videos into other languages.
Probably not worth it: if you only need basic, robotic-but-clear speech in large volumes (for example, reading out system messages), cheaper cloud services from Google or Amazon can do the job for less. And if you're happy recording your own voice, a good microphone plus Descript's Studio Sound may serve you better.
Alternatives to consider
- Descript — if you record your own voice and want to edit audio and video by editing text.
- HeyGen — if you also want an on-screen AI presenter, not just a voice.
- Google Cloud Text-to-Speech or Amazon Polly — cheaper for plain, high-volume speech, but less natural and more technical to set up.
Verdict
ElevenLabs is the tool to beat for natural AI voices in 2026. For creators, the Creator plan at $22 a month hits the sweet spot: enough minutes for regular videos, a commercial licence and a professional voice clone. Go in knowing that credits disappear faster than the estimates suggest, write your scripts carefully to avoid re-takes, and generate in short sections. If you do that, it's one of the most useful AI tools a video creator can pay for.
Frequently asked questions
Is ElevenLabs free?
Yes. The free plan gives 10,000 credits a month — about 10 minutes of speech — with 3 custom voices and 3 Studio projects. It doesn't include a commercial licence, so use a paid plan for monetised content.
Can I use ElevenLabs voices on a monetised YouTube channel?
Yes, on a paid plan. All paid plans from Starter ($6 a month) include a commercial licence. Note that YouTube also expects videos to add real value — commentary, research or original visuals — rather than being mass-produced with little human input.
How many minutes do I get for $22 a month?
The Creator plan includes 121,000 credits, which ElevenLabs estimates at about 121 minutes of speech with standard models. Re-generating lines uses extra credits, so plan for a little less.
Can I clone someone else's voice?
Only with their clear permission. ElevenLabs requires you to have the rights to any voice you clone, and cloning a public figure or anyone without consent can break the law in many countries.
What is the best ElevenLabs alternative?
It depends on the job: Descript if you record your own voice, HeyGen if you need an on-screen avatar as well, and Google or Amazon text-to-speech for cheap, high-volume plain speech.
