Google announced a package of education updates on 3 November 2026. The main change: Guided Learning is launching in Google Classroom globally, and its capabilities are coming to Google Search.

Guided Learning is Gemini's learning mode, built to help students work through a topic rather than simply receive an answer.

What Google announced

  • Guided Learning in Classroom, worldwide: available inside Google Classroom in every market it serves.
  • Guided Learning in Search: its capabilities are being brought to Google Search.
  • Controls for school accounts: an updated approach to controls for Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search on K-12 student accounts.
  • Research, funding and training: new research, new Google.org funding and more AI training for educators.

Inside the classroom

According to Google's AI in Education report, published alongside the announcement, students can use Guided Learning in Classroom's Focus Mode, and teachers get access to full chat transcripts. In the US, Miami-Dade schools are providing age-appropriate generative AI tools to 100,000 high school students.

What the research says

Google's report cites several studies of AI in learning:

  • Learning gains with Guided Learning "equivalent to between one and two years of typical learning progress".
  • A 0.26 standard deviation improvement in maths in Sierra Leone, and +0.14 standard deviation for undergraduates in Japan.
  • A four-week pilot across three secondary schools in the UK.
  • Teachers in Italy cut average lesson preparation time by 37%; teachers in Northern Ireland saved up to 10 hours a week.

Funding and teacher training, including India

The report describes a three-year, $150 million Google.org commitment to AI education and digital well-being, including a UNICEF partnership covering Brazil, India, Kenya and Pakistan. Experience AI, backed by a $10 million Google.org grant, has trained 63,000 teachers and reached 5.9 million students.

The Google AI Educator Series, run with ISTE, offers free training to educators in the US, India, the UK, the Philippines and South Korea.

What is still unclear

Google has not yet given dates for Guided Learning in Search or details of the new K-12 controls by age group. We will update this story when it does.
